French cinema is innovative and creative. The artistic achievement of French actors and directors has profoundly changed the global film industry. Working not only on French movies, but also in films made in English and other languages has added even further to the international influence of French actors and directors.

Early cinema

French inventors Auguste and Louis Lumière are often credited with inventing the cinematograph, an early motion picture camera and projector system. Their first public screening in 1895 was considered to be the birth of cinema.

During the silent film era, France produced iconic filmmakers like Georges Méliès, known for his groundbreaking special effects in films such as A Trip to the Moon (1902). French cinema also saw the rise of impressionist and avant-garde cinema, with artists such as Abel Gance and René Clair.

The avant-garde movement in the 1920s, and later, the poetic realism genre, flourished under directors Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné. The 1930s saw the emergence of renowned French actors such as Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan.

A new era

The French New Wave, or Nouvelle Vague, emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s, challenging traditional filmmaking conventions. Directors, including François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer, and Jean-Luc Godard (pictured above) ushered in a new era of French cinema marked by innovative storytelling and focus on character psychology.

International acclaim came with films such as Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima, My Love, François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows (1959), and Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960). The Cannes Film Festival became a global platform for showcasing French and international cinema.

French cinema has continued to thrive. Amélie (2001) and The Artist (2011) gained widespread recognition and multiple awards.

With the spread of various streaming services, French television has also become more popular outside France, and many French actors have appeared in English-language productions.
